Trekking : 22 days
Maximum Altitude : 5416m
Accommodation : Camping or lodges on
trek; hotels in Kathmandu and Pokhara
Special Notes : There is not really
any easy alternative to reach the start of this trek but to travel by
road. The increasing difficulties of road travel with the long delays,
checks, roadblocks and multiple accidents make road journeys in this part
of Nepal difficult. We return from Pokhara to Kathmandu by flight. This
trek is available to individuals and groups through our tailor made service.
Update Spring 2010 - Road building:
Roads have now being constructed on both sides of the Thorung La pass.
In spring of 2010 these gravel dirt roads are carrying various types of
vehicles including large 4x4 s. From the usual starting point of Besi
Sahar the road now continues beyond Syange and construction continues
to Manang. On the other side the road is completed from Pokhara to Jomsom
and Muktinath just below the pass. On both sides of the Thorung La there
are sections where the road and original trail are on opposite sides of
the river. This does however still cause a conflict of interests with
locals and trekkers. We suggest that if clients wish to trek this area
they trek in from the area of Besi Sahar, over the Thorang La to Jomsom,
spend a day or so going to Kagbeni and then fly from Jomsom to Pokhara
and Kathmandu. There are also some interesting and challenging side treks
possible around Manang. Contact us for revised itinerary information.
